Real Men DO Take Care of Their Mental Health



Close your eyes and picture a person who has severe depression. Chances are, you're probably picturing a woman. In our society, we associate many mental illnesses, particularly depression, with women. This has lead to an under-diagnosis of mental problems in men. This is a dangerous prospect. Untreated mental illness in men and women can lead to serious repercussions.

The biggest problem in dealing with men's mental health is that it hasn't been dealt with in the past. Even though males suffer from just as many mental illnesses as women, women have been the focus when it comes to treatment. It's much more acceptable and common for a woman to seek help than for a man. Going to a shrink just isn't seen a "manly".

Another problem with mental health in men is that symptoms of problems in men vary from those in women. The symptoms we normally associate with a disease may not be the disease presents itself in males. This means that a man or their loved ones are less likely to notice warning signs until it's become a big problem.

So, what do all the differences between men and women mean? Well, they actually translate into a serious issue for men. Because symptoms of mental illness are often ignored, men are much more likely to successfully commit suicide. By leaving a mental illness untreated, you're also increasing the likelihood that you could cause harm to others, as well as yourself.

You should try to notice how you feel on a daily basis and recognize when you don't feel quite right. If you suspect you may have a problem, research psychological symptoms in men or ask your doctor just to be sure. Being overly cautious is better than overlooking a serious problem.

If you think you might have a problem, don't give into the urge to deal with it yourself. Getting help does not make you weak or less manly; it makes you a responsible person who's concerned about themselves and their family.

In addition to mental health issues, not taking care of your self mentally can lead to physical problems. Men generally take less time at the end of the day to relax and unwind. Taking a few minutes to relax could prevent serious health problems in the future, like heart attacks and other stress related illnesses.

A psychologist or psychiatrist is designed to help you overcome your problems in your own way. They will not treat you as if you are "weak" or "lesser" because you have a problem. And chances are, neither will your family. A weak man is someone who ignores his problems and doesn't face them and treat them head on.

While it may be hard for you to accept help, if you think you have a mental illness, you do need help. It's imperative to the health and safety of you and your family that you stand up, admit your problems, and get help. You'll all be better off for it.
